In the world of a surplus of everything, there are a lot of choices when it comes to hair ties. I know, who would have thought you would have to research for the best hair ties to get but it can make a difference. Not only in the health of your hair but how long the style lasts, if you have a dent or not, or if it’s right for certain hair types. Certain hair ties have different effects on fragile hair, thick hair, heavy hair, or a curly mane.
I have my trusty top 3 brands/types of hair ties that will work for the majority of people. I don’t want to say EVERYONE because someone will have something to say…..

Silk/Satin Scrunchies
This is my most used type of ponytail holder for the day-to-day and for daily wear. When I wash my face, need to just get it out of my face and I throw it in a low pony with a silk scrunchie.
Silk or satin hair scrunchies are great because they slip through your hair so there is less damage. Since they slip, I find they don’t hold super well through a workout or if I need it to say to 2+ hours. They are perfect for everyday wear if you always wear a ponytail.
This is probably the ONLY type of hair tie that won’t leave creases in your hair. You can’t only really avoid a dent in your hair if you don’t have your hair tie wrapped around really tight. Silk scrunchie is the best to reduce frizz and can help stop causing breakage.
I also wear these if I am trying to maintain my curls through the night. My hair coiled in a twisted bun, secured with a satin scrunchy, on a silk or satin pillowcase is the secret to my curls lasting. Check out that blog post here.
BRANDS OF SILK/SATIN HAIR TIES
I only have 2 sets that I use.
1 set I got for free from Sephora when I did an online order a while ago. They are really nice and don’t stretch out. Since you can’t get them, here are some that I have found good reviews on and are budget-friendly.
Now, when it comes to silk, I have the Slip Skinnies. Slip has 3 different sizes and you can choose which is best for you. The Skinnies I like because they aren’t obnoxiously loud.
However, they are expensive for a hair tie so make sure you don’t lose these and they tend to stretch out. They are about $30 for a hair tie set of 6.
Hair Tie Coils
Hair Coils, Telli Ties, Invisibobbles, Spiral elastics aka looks like what grandma puts her keys on they are all basically the same. They really grip hair for a secure ponytail.
I say basically and not exactly because some are thicker coils and I have only used the Invisibobble brand.
These give your hair, ponytail, and buns a little more volume because of those coils. These give you an all-day hold and can really stretch.
When you take it out of your hair, it will look stretched out BUT they go back to its original size. Which is a HUGE plus for me!
This will leave creases in your hair especially if you have it super tight, it’s inevitable…Anyone who says differently is lying or they have their hair in a loose style.
The coil hair ties don’t damage my hair but do be careful when you are taking them out because if you don’t have a clean wrap, you could rip some hair out.
These are the best for the gym or for playing sports.
Gimme Hair Ties
Gimme Hair Ties are kind of like a stretchy fabric that has a thick band to help give you a more perky pony. They have different color options as well as different types of hair ties based on your hair type. These work great for half up styles too!
USING A GIMME HAIR TIE TO ACHIEVE THIS HAIRSTYLE

- Thick hair band
- Long hair band
They are reasonably priced in my opinion $12 for a hair tie set of 6.
In my personal experience, I like to use these for workouts and buns that I want to last a long time. They aren’t super stretchy like the coils, so if you want to try to get one more wrapped around your hair it can be a little tricky.
These are the best hair ties for thicker hair in my opinion. As long as you get the “Thick Hair” set. For thinner hair, get the thinner ones.
I haven’t found that these don’t stretch out either and out of the 3 I have mentioned, this is the most comfortable to wear on my wrist when it’s not in my hair. I found these leave creases 50/50, depending on how much hair you have in the ponytail and how long you leave them in your hair.
They have these similar knock-off versions from Amazon that I have heard are just as good. They offer the same idea of different sizes for your hair type.
I also found one more of the best hair ties from Amazon. 100, three colors, only $8! My new favs. They hold super well (I use two for all-day hold) and are a great option for half up styles because they are a little smaller.
Those are the 3 (or 4) best hair ties in my honest opinion.
