Clear elastic hair ties are amazing but also the worst, am I right? They are the best option for certain hairstyles and really come in handy when you don’t want a big scrunchy or black hair tie throwing off your vibe. But they can break in the middle of the day and rip out your hair.
Through my years of doing different hairstyles, I have come up with some simple tips to avoid breaking my hair and make them more fun to use.
I personally like the Scunci ones over the Goody brand. I’ve tried a lot but they all are basically the same quality. These tips will help you no matter what brand of clear elastic hair ties you have.
**Here are the exact ones I have from Target, but here are some Scunci ones on Amazon if that’s more convenient.
1.Double Up on the Elastics
Since they are more susceptible to breakage (no matter what brand you get), if you have 2 clear elastics, you always have a backup.
If the hairstyle you are doing is secured with bobby pins on top of an elastic, you might only need to use 1. You will have the bobby pins to help hold it in case the elastic breaks, but then again, it’s always better to have a backup.
If you have found clear elastics that are strong, send me a message on Instagram @annierosette93 or comment down below, because I would love to know!
2.Only Use Them Once
One and done. Once you stretch them out, the integrity of the clear elastic hair ties goes down and is more likely to break.
Even if you end up trying a hairstyle, use it, but don’t keep the style in, still throw it away. It might seem wasteful, but why risk it?
3.Tie It Only Twice
The more you stretch it, the more tension the little clear elastic is under. Even if the section of hair you want to wrap the elastic around is small, two ties will be enough.
Obviously there are times I tie it three times but very rarely.
4.Clear The Area Before You Tie
You don’t want little stragglers to be caught in the elastic because when you try to take it, you’ll rip out those hairs.
Either brush your hair or clear it with your hands. Sometimes it’s inevitable depending on the hairstyle so you want to follow the next tip if this happens.
5.Have a Hair Tie Cutter
For little girls’ hair, this is a lifesaver. Hair Tie Cutter. I got mine off Amazon and they are great for tangled hair.
It’s like an envelope cutter where you just slip the cutter through.
You want to make sure you get the top of the elastic and NOT your hair.
6.Gently Glide It Out
When you are ready to take the elastic out and it’s clear of stragglers, hold tight at the top of your head and with your fingernails glide the clear elastic down your hair until it’s out. Go very slow.
If it feels like you are going to pull out your hair, you can always use the hair tie cutter.
