Some Tips and Tricks to Trim Split Ends at Home
DON’T USE DULL SCISSORS
Dull shears can actually cause more split ends. Make sure they aren’t kitchen scissors. You can find good hair-cutting scissors from Sally’s beauty supply, Amazon, and Walmart.
Not only can you see split ends, but you can also feel them.
Sandwich your fingers between your dry hair and run them from root to end. You’ll feel a texture change, that’s when the split end starts.
It’s easier to find and see split ends on straight hair but hair that becomes stuck or tangles easily when running your fingers through it is an indicator of split ends.
For curly hair, split ends usually create knots and coils at the ends.
With all these trimming techniques, use a cut known as point cutting. Point cutting is achieved by holding scissors vertically pointing up, then bringing your ends facing upwards and point cutting into them vertically. You want to do this especially if you have straight, course hair.
Straight up Trim
A trim is usually cutting off an inch at least.
Do this on dry hair if you are doing this your self. This is the most fool proof way as when your hair is wet it will shorten when it dries.
- Part your hair in sections
- Cut a little bit at a time
- Don’t take huge sections and start hacking away
- Cut at an angle to avoid a harsh line aka point cutting
Dusting
This is barely taking anything off but instead just cutting into the hair as opposed to cutting the ends off.
Twist a half-inch section of dry, clean hair to see if any broken split hairs come out. Then just take a pair of small scissors and trim off the split hairs.
Or you can slide finger down the hair and cut off the dead, split, or little white bits off.
Twist (or braid) & Trim
Take 1/2 inch of dry hair twist towards the end and you’ll see the split ends stick out and snip them off and cut at an angle.
You can also braid your hair (this is ideal for curly or wavy hair) and cut the pieces that stick out.
These are some ways you can trim your split ends at home in between salon visits to maintain healthy hair and keep your length.
Hope this helped extend your trips to the salon while also helping you keep long, healthy hair!
