Men’s Skincare: How and Where to Start

Even though we all have the same skin, skin care can be intimidating for men. There are too many options and it’s not their thing, so I hope this post gives you some places to start. Let’s get into Men’s Skincare and how/where to start.

If your man is only washing his face with his body wash in the shower, we need to K.I.S.S, keep it simple stupid (get the reference?!). Going from nothing to everything is going to be overwhelming and will stop as quickly as it started. We can start with 1 of 2 options.

Bare Bones:

  1. Cleanser
  2. Moisturizer

Pretty Basic:

  1. Cleanser
  2. Toner
  3. Moisturizer

**Pro Tip: Write it on a sticky note and keep it on the mirror or somewhere where you will see it.

If they just start with this in the evening, eventually have them do it morning and night, but sometimes you just have to start somewhere.

Let’s be real, they don’t want to use pink bottles and your jade roller (at least not yet). There are gender neutral brands out there that are really good for men and women’s skin that are good starting points.

Let’s get into the steps and benefits in Layman’s terms to express to our beloved men in our lives why they need to be taking care of their skin just as much as they do about their hair (if you know my husband, that’s one thing he will spend HOURS on before leaving the house).

Don’t worry, I have some product recommendations that are available at the drugstore as well as Rodan + Fields because, well, they are the best! But you can always have them use yours.

Cleanser

Cleansing is SO important to remove toxins, oil, bacteria from touching your face, and sunscreen from the morning.

How to: Wet the face, apply a pea size amount of wash to hands and rub on face in circular motions for 30 seconds. Rinse and pat face dry.

Toner

Amazing, and necessary, for everyone especially men because it helps balance the skin and helps with acne, ingrown hairs, and signs of aging.

How to: Apply toner to a gauze pad, NOT A COTTON BALL. Wipe the gauze pad across your face and neck.

**Pro Tip: If they have sensitive skin, skip the toner, they can irritate already irritated skin.

For acne and ingrown hairs, look for a toner with lactic or salicylic acid in combination with soothing ingredients link aloe or chamomile

For dark spots and aging, look for AHA’s, BHS’s, or glycolic acid.

Recommendation:

Moisturizer

Without moisturizing, your skin can feel tight and lack, well, moisture. DON’T SKIP THIS STEP! You will need one in the morning with SPF and one for night that is hydrating with rich, nourishing ingredients that won’t clog your pores.

How to: get about a dime size amount and place a blob on each cheek, forehead, and chin. Then rub in until absorbed.
